Halifax Commons

The Halifax Common is Canada’s oldest urban park, gifted in 1763 by King George III “for the use of the inhabitants of the town of Halifax as Commons forever.” The Common is home to vast green space, several sports fields, a large water fountain, swimming pool, and skating oval. The Common is host to events ranging from organised sports, to large summer concerts and is a favourite leisure destination for Halifax residents.

Citadel Hill

A defining landmark in Halifax. The city is built around this iconic hilltop fortress that draws international visitors and locals to explore, walk along the ramparts, and discover the past. The fort offers panoramic views over the city, across the Common to Agricola West and the North End, and to the mouth of the harbour. Construction of the citadel began in 1828, but the star-shaped fortress was not completed until 1856. The large, masonry-construction was designed to repel both a land-based and naval attack by United States forces and was inspired by the designs of Louis XIV's commissary of fortifications Sébastien Le Prestre, Seigneur de Vauban.

Historic Waterfront

Halifax’s historic waterfront is among it’s most famous attractions. Stroll the boardwalk on a warm summer day, stop at a local beer garden and enjoy a drink by the ocean. Grab some ice cream and relax in a hammock by the water. In the summer, outdoor dining and local festivals can be found throughout the boardwalk. There is always something new to enjoy on the waterfront.

Halifax Armoury

Completed in 1899, the Halifax Armoury sits proudly at the northern corner of the Halifax Common, just three blocks from Agricola West. The armoury served as an important transit point for the Boer War, both world wars and is currently undergoing renovations due to structural damage suffered during the Halifax Explosion in 1917. The armoury is another iconic local historic Halifax landmark.
